The position of Social Justice Representative is new to the Murdoch University Guild in 2009 and is recognition of the importance the Guild places on social justice issues. Having been elected to take on this new portfolio on the Guild Council I am interested in fostering a culture of awareness and dialogue among Murdoch students as well as working with Students Without Borders (SWB) to provide assistance and opportunities to get involved.

Getting Involved

In conjunction with SWB, the Guild has already started planning campaigns and implementing new programs which students can get involved in throughout the year. The Guild recognises how important it is for students to have a well rounded university experience and becoming an active member on campus and in the wider community is part of that education. The experiences you can gain from volunteering and taking part in campaigns is not only enriching within itself but can add to the skills and knowledge you can bring to the workplace and may even make you aware of job opportunities that haven't been considered before.

Along with providing such opportunities for students the Guild will also be working on creating a culture of discussion and dialogue among students. Murdoch University has a diverse student body and to benefit from that we need to be able to listen and engage productively with each other. The issues concerning our world today, whether it be the environment, poverty, war or the economic crisis, are issues that we all face and the only way we are going to be able to tackle them is by staying informed, getting involved and interacting meaningfully with each other.

If you are interested in getting involved or have any ideas for campaigns or events that you would like to run, the Murdoch Guild and SWB are here to provide information, resources and assistance for students. Please feel free to email me or drop by the Guild Building (Amenities) Room 2.057. Volunteers are always needed throughout the year to help run successful campaigns and events.
