Why should I join?

The Guild is the representative voice for students, and has had input into university decision-making.  We bring your
concerns to the table. We make the University aware when your needs aren't being met.

The Guild is here to protect your rights. You might not think you'll ever need the Guild, or that the SRC concerns you. But the Guild is here to know your rights, even when you don't.

The Guild is run by students for students. If you're passionate about issues that relate to University life and beyond, you can get involved in the Guild in several ways:

By being a Financial Guild member you also recieve discounts and access to a range of services.

How much does it cost?

The fee varies depending on your enrolment status and campus:

Campus Full Time Part Time
South St $50 $30
Rockingham $25 $15
Mandurah $25 $15
External - $15

Do I have to join?

No. Guild membership is now voluntary in Western Australia.

Students who do not pay the fee can still elect to be basic Guild members and will still be represented by the Guild and therefore will be able to access some basic services but they will not be 'FINANCIAL' Guild members. That means they will miss out on lots of great benefits and important services available only to Financial Guild members!

During 2008 because of VSU students will have to show their Guild sticker to prove Financial Guild membership in order to benefit from all the discounts and services around campus - for instance at the Guild's Walters Coffee Shop - the Guild will provide Financial Guild members with a colour sticker for their student card, a different colour for each semester. The sticker will not be removable. By showing your sticker at our Coffee Shops, the Gym, Sports and Recreation Centre, to our discount provider partners, and elsewhere you will receive many, many benefits - we are here to support you during your education and university experience, and help make that difference.

Opting out of Guild membership

Opting out of Guild membership or changing your status from financial to basic does not automatically entitle you to a refund. When you join the guild, you join for the whole year. If you wish to have your financial membership fee waived, you must submit your request to the Guild President. Please refer to the following motion passed unanimously by the Guild Council:

The Murdoch University Guild of Students allows the Guild President to only waive a Voluntary Student Unionism fee if the student is: a) not studying on any Murdoch campus for the entire duration of the semester (eg. involved in a study abroad program); b) if the student is in severe financial hardship and this has been demonstrated or proven to the satisfaction of the Guild President.

If the student wishes to appeal the decision of Guild President, on the grounds that they fit into either of the two categories stated above, then that appeal case must be put to the Guild Council, who will make the final decision.
