B Book Subsidy Scheme. Wouldn’t $80 towards the cost of books & course materials help lower your stress levels? Pick up an application form the Guild and apply for $50. Application forms available from week 10 of each semester. Health Care or Pension Card essential! .
C Centrelink. So who doesn’t get stressed when dealing with Centrelink? The Guild Education & Welfare officer can help you with advice, application forms, reviews, appeals, penalties and breaches.
D Discrimination. If your being hassled get in touch with the Equity Department 9360 6480.
E Energy. This is vital in keeping the mind and body functioning and also helps to maintain body temperature. When you exercise your body releases mood elevating hormones called endorphin’s which act to improve feeling of well-being. So there you go, eating a healthy diet and getting regular exercise is definitely beneficial.
F Financial Counselling. Organising your finances on a shoestring budget can be very difficult (and stressful). The Guild can refer you to a professional Financial Counsellor for help with budgeting and debt negotiation etc. Alternatively contact the Financial Counsellors Resource Project on 9221 9411 to find out the location of your nearest centre.
G Game. That’s Guild Activities Mind Expansion. H Health & Counselling. The university provides a Health & Counselling service to staff and students on campus. University Counsellors are all qualified psychologists. They provide help and therapy for all sorts of problems including issues ranging from study or relationship problems to anxiety, grief or depression. A health service is also provided via the campus nurse and a part-time on-site doctor. Contact them on 9360 2293.
I Iron. Make sure your getting enough! Iron is an important mineral which helps transport oxygen around the body. You’ll find it in meat, fish, whole grain cereals, leafy vegies, nuts and beans. Diets deficient in iron can result in dizziness, fatigue, breathlessness and even anaemia.
J Jobs! Need to earn a crust? The guild runs an employment register for Guild members looking for seasonal, part-time and casual jobs. Check it out at the Guild Service Station.
K Kidneys. Healthy kidneys filter toxins and waste products from the blood while making sure it retains proteins. Keep your kidneys healthy by having regular blood pressure checks, not smoking, drinking plenty of water and keeping your weight under control.
L Loans. The university provides emergency cash loans of up to $200. Longer term loans of up to $1000 are also available. Application forms are available from the Office of Student Services.
M Mental Health. One in five Australians suffer some form of mental illness, with the three main areas being depression, anxiety and substance abuse. If your feeling down, stressed or simply overwhelmed, talk things over with one of the university counsellors or make an appointment to see your GP.
N Newstart. Students over the age of 21 and studying part-time can claim Newstart Allowance. The good news is that it’s more than you would be getting on Youth Allowance. Contact Centrelink on 13 28 50 and find out if your eligible.
O Off Campus Discounts. All you guild members will know about these of course. Join the Guild and start saving! Contact Guild reception on 9360 2158 for further info.
P Protein. Get plenty of it. Our bodies need protein for growth repair and replacement of cells. You’ll find it in meat, fish, eggs, some dairy products as well as grains and pulses.
Q Quit smoking. Save yourself heaps of money and avoid being forced to stand around on cold, wet and windy corners because your habit isn’t acceptable by those ‘indoors’. Quit and make your lungs happy J Smoking robs your body of vitamin C, an important nutrient required during times of stress. Smokers are more likely to develop cardiovascular disease and cancer.
R Relax. Relaxing provides time out and an opportunity for mind and body to unwind. If you have difficulty relaxing try techniques such as meditation and yoga. The Guild Sport & Rec Centre offers yoga classes. Contact them on 9360 2318.
S Sexuality. Lesbian, gay transgender, bisexual, queer and/or questioning? Students in the sexuality collective meet to discuss, plot and organise around issues of discrimination and equality. Contact the Guild Sexuality Officer on 9360 2158.
T Tax Help. From July through to the end of October the Guild runs a Tax Help service. (It’s FREE to low income earners). Students who are on a low income can help to complete their tax return by contacting the Guild Education & Welfare Officer on 9360 6583.
U Urine. Pale yellow fluid excreted from the kidneys to the bladder and passed on as waste from the body. If it’s not pale and yellow…… look at your diet and consider carefully what you put into your system.
V Value. Value yourself and those around you.
W Walking. Walking is a great way to get some exercise and de-stress for the day. The Heart Foundation recommends a brisk walk for 30 minutes a day, every day if possible.
X Xtras. What you get if you’re a guild member!
Y Yoga. Yoga, breathing and postures are believed to offer many health benefits, including increased flexibility, coordination, improved strength and endurance. Research also shows that yoga can help reduce anxiety, slow breathing and lower blood pressure.
Z Zero; fail; N. If you receive a zero (N) for your unit result, the Guild Education & Welfare Officer can assist you with an appeal, providing you have valid grounds of course. Call 9360 6583.
